Author Guidelines
Submitting Articles to the Scientific Bulletin of the Moscow State Technical University of Civil Aviation
- Original manuscripts that have not been published before are accepted for consideration. While submitting manuscript the author is obliged not to publish it (in full or in part) in another publishing or electronic edition without the editorial board written agreement.
- The author submitting his manuscript to the editorial board ensures copyright to use the material submitted to the editorial board, charges the editorial board to publish it.
- The editorial board accepts manuscripts to consider provided observing the typography rules of articles coming to Bulletin Editorial Board of MSTUCA (further - the typography rules) (Appendix).
- The editorial board reserves the right not to file manuscripts which do not meet the typography rules.
- Every author is entitled to enter group of writers not more than in 3 articles of the Bulletin issue (the number can be exceeded by the Editorial Board special decision).
- The group of authors of one article cannot exceed 3 people (the number of co-authors can be exceeded by merely the Editorial Board special decision).
- The author submits the following typed and electronic material copies to the Editorial Board:
- The article text of 7 – 17 pages including the English part
- (big volume manuscripts are only accepted by the Editorial Board special decision), according to the typography rules.
- Each illustration as the single file.
- The author's reference containing information about all the authors;
- The experts decision on the possibility to publish the article in free press (if there are no members of the MSTUCA staff among the authors).
- The grounds not to publish an article can be as follows:
- inadequacy of represented material to the Bulletin subject-matter;
- inadequacy of represented material to the article typography requirements;
- non-availability or not relevant annotation to requirements;
- not correct presentation of the article English part;
- a negative review;
- the author’s infringing copyright and related rights.
- The articles not accepted for publishing are not returned to their authors. In this case the Editorial Board, on the authors’ request, send the review copies or a motivated refusal by mail.
The Rules of Article Representation Sent to the Scientific Bulletin Editorial Board of the Moscow State Technical University of Civil Aviation
The manuscript submitted to the Bulletin Editorial Board undergoes modelling. Since all the components of the article must be editable, when making typography one should observe the rules as follows:
Document format: A4.
Page margins: top – 2,8; bottom-2,5; left and right – 1,75.
Space to Header and Footer – 2 cm.
The whole text is typed with single line spacing.
Font – Times New Roman.
Equation Editor – MathType.
UDI. According to the universal decimal classification an article index is typed in Regular, size 10 pt, left alignment.
The title of the article. The name of the article is typed in Bold, size 14 pt, all caps, with no hyphenation, centre alignment, with no paragraph indention, without a full stop at the end. Using the key words in the title is advisable.
Authors with a compulsory place of affiliation (author’s place of employment). Initials without spaces and author’s surname with spaces are typed in Bold, size 12 pt, all caps, centre alignment, with no paragraph indention, without a full stop at the end. Similarly, all the co-authors separated by commas are listed. A reference is made following each of the names. The place of affiliation (author’s place of employment), city and country are noted with a new paragraph after each reference, in Italics, 12 pt.
Annotation. An article annotation of 200-300 words is typed with a paragraph indention of 1,25 cm, in Regular, size 10 pt, justified. The author’s abstract has a function of a source of information independent of the article content and it must be:
- informative (not to contain general phrases, common concepts);
- meaningful (to reflect research aims, the main content of an article and the results);
- structured (to follow the logical description of the results in the article, following the IMRAD standard structure)
- and it must:
- contain meaningful words from the text of an article, use technical (professional) terminology and avoid difficult grammatical structures.
The author’s abstract includes the most substantial aspects of the article content: the subject, the topic, the aim of the work; the method and the methodology of carrying out the work, the results of the work; the field for the application of the results, the conclusions. However, the words “subject”, “topic” and “research objective” themselves should not be used.
The subject, the topic and the aim of the work are stated if they aren’t clear from the article title; it’s reasonable to describe the method and the methodology of carrying out the work only when they are distinguished by novelty or they are a subject of interest in the context of this article.
The results of the work are described in a maximum clear and informative way. The text must be laconic and concise, with no secondary information, excessive parenthetic words, historical notes unless they are the main content of a manuscript. Acronyms and notions except the ones that are commonly used be avoided, references to the literature sources aren’t given.
Key words. The title “Key words” is typed with a paragraph indention of 1,25, in Bold, size 10 pt, justified, and then after a colon no more than 8 words and collocations defining the subject area of the work are listed within 1-2 lines, in Regular, size 10 pt.
The text of the article. The text of the article is typed in Regular, size 12 pt, with a paragraph indention of 1,25 cm, justified. The tables, pictures and formulas are placed directly after the text, where they are referred to for the first time. A picture is not allowed to be drawn up of segmental elements. Each picture is created in a separate file, and then it is inserted into the article with the use of “Insert” and with a text wrapping around the picture. The pictures are not allowed to get out of the text bounds to the margins. All the pictures have to provide simple scaling saving the mutual elements positioning and the inner headings. The pictures created with other facilities or scanned have to be shifted to the chroma format “Grayscale” and converted into one of the formats: .jpg, .tif, .pdf. Each picture is attached to the document as a separate file when it’s sent to Bulletin Editorial Board. All the information in tables and pictures should be in Russian or English, including the names of those tables and pictures. Such presentation of graphics makes the article more comprehensible for English-speaking authors.
The index number of a bibliographical reference is placed in an appropriate line in square brackets. If a reference is assigned to a certain text fragment, a page number goes after a comma. For example, [10, p. 81].
The structure of the text in the article should correspond with IMRAD standard, in other words, containing the following parts:
Introduction;
Methods and Methodology;
Results;
Discussion;
Conclusion.
There may be considered an exception for reviews in agreement with the Editorial Board. Some of the parts like Discussion and Conclusion can be integrated.
References. The title “References” is typed in Bold, size 12 pt, all caps, centre alignment, with no paragraph indention, without a full stop at the end and below it a list of references is given with a font size of 12 pt, a paragraph indention, justified. Author’s surname and initials are typed in Bold, a bibliographical description of a source is given in Regular. The reference sources are placed in the order of their mention in the article and described according to GOST R 7.0.5-2008.
There must be at least 16 references. Preferably, 50 percent of the referents should be no older than 5 years, including those published in the magazines with the index of Web of Science, Scopus, Science Index in databases.
Textbooks, governing documents, archival records, statistic digests and anonym newspaper paragraphs are better being excluded from the references. Referring to original topical articles is recommended instead of referring to the thesis and its synopsis, as the thesis itself is considered a manuscript and not a printed source.
It is desirable to mention sources with DOI in cited references.
Information about the authors. The title “Information about the authors” is typed in Bold, size 12 pt, all caps, centre alignment, with no paragraph indention, without a full stop at the end and below it the information about each author: the surname, first name and patronymic in full (Bold, size 12pt), scientific degree and rank, capacity and place of work (studies), e-mail (Regular, 12pt) is typed with a paragraph indention of 1,25 cm, justified.
The part of an article in English. The part of an article in English is presented in professional English (on-line Internet Translators don’t provide an appropriate level) and includes the following information:
- the name of the article (the name of the article translated into English is typed in Bold, 14 pt, all caps, with no hyphenation, centre alignment, without a full stop at the end. There must be no transliterations from Russian, except untranslatable proper names and other objects that have own names when the name of the article is translated; a professional slang understandable only to Russian-speaking specialists isn’t used);
- author’s information:
- author’s name, patronymic initial and surname (they are transliterated and typed in Bold, size 12 pt, right alignment, with no paragraph indention).
- organization name, city and country – author’s place of work (study) (they are typed in English, in Regular, 12pt, right alignment, with no paragraph indention. A fully translated, officially accepted organization name without its component parts, denoting its belonging to the department, form of ownership, organization status and etc. is stated; the names of departments, laboratories and other structural subdivisions within the organization aren’t stated. It’s necessary to use the rules of spelling organization names in English: all significant words, except articles and prepositions, must be written with the first capital letter. A full registered organization address is stated in sequence as follows: house number, street, city, postcode, country. Untranslatable names are transliterated).
- author’s e-mail address (it’s typed in Regular, size 12 pt, right alignment, with no paragraph indention);
- author’s abstract (the title “ABSTRACT” is typed in Bold, size 12 pt, all caps, centre alignment, with no paragraph indention, without a full stop at the end and below it an amplified author’s abstract in English, including the same article aspects as the annotation in Russian is given. Professional translation of Russian-language annotation into English is allowed);
- key words (the title “Key words” is typed with a paragraph indention of 1,25 cm, in Bold, size 10 pt, justified and then after a colon key words are typed within 1-2 lines, in Regular, size 10 pt. Professional English-language terminology should be used as far as possible rather than direct translation of Russian notions into English.
- References (the title “REFERENCES” is typed in Bold, size 12 pt, all caps, centre alignment, with no paragraph indention, without a full stop at the end and below it a list of references is typed with a paragraph indention of 1,25 cm, font size 12 pt, justified. A list of “References” is formed in accordance with Harvard standard requirements from Russian-language references. English-language sources are given in their original form. Consideration of the cited source in the authors’ scholarly endeavour evaluation and its impact on an academic standing of the issue depend on a consistent description of the sources used in the references.
- Information about the author. The title «Information about the author(s)» is typed in Bold, 12 pt, all caps, centre alignment, no paragraph indention, no full stop at the end, and then the information from the Russian part of the article translated into English is listed below with paragraph indention 1,25 cm and centre alignment.
Russian-language sources are formed in accordance with the following rules:
- The number of authors isn’t bounded by three persons, all the authors are stated if possible. The authors’ surnames are given in transliteration, in Bold, in Italic type.
- The full names of sources and publications are used. The names of publications, monographs, article digests and conferences are transliterated in the roman type with the following translation into English in square brackets in the absence of the original English names.
http://www.translit.ru/ is a free website to be used when transliterating Russian into roman type (BSI variant). - The name of a literature source is given in English. An original English title is given for translated and English-language publications.
- The names of publishers and CIS organizations are given in transliteration, in italic type. If a publisher (an enterprise, an institute, an organization etc.) has an official English name, then that name is stated.
- A city name, conference names, explanatory words, collocations are translated into English. If an international conference has a second English-language title then it is stated.
- Output data with notations are given in English. Acronyms are replaced with English analogues: Т.3 – Vol.3; C.10-19 – pp. 10-19; 323 c. – 323 p.; №1- no.1; выпуск – issue; автореферат диссертации – Abstract of the dissertation; международная конференция – International conference proceedings (Int. Conf. Proc.); научно-технический – Scientific -and-technical (Sci.-Tech.) монография – monograph; конгресс – Congress – Congr; симпозиум – Symposium – Symp. и т.д.
- The language of the source is stated (In Russ.).
- The delimiters «/», «//», « - », «;» aren’t used in the references given in Latin.
The articles submitted in English should have a Russian-language part, that includes the same elements as an English-language part of the article in Russian. A list of “References” is formed in accordance with GOST R 7.0.5-2008.
An article format must correspond to the sample of layout given below.
